Tutoring System

Tutoring System and its Purpose

International students need personalized support to adapt to Japanese customs and succeed in their studies after arriving in Japan. Since it is difficult for faculty alone to provide this support, Japanese senior students as tutors play an important role. The tutor system works best when trust and cooperation exist between faculty, tutors, and international students.

The eligible students for this system are foreign students who are planning to enroll at our university for more than three months and who have been issued a residence card. In principle, the applicable period and number of hours are as follows:

Undergraduate international students (full-time students) 1 year after enrollment (80 hours of support)
Graduate students (full-time students) 6 months in Japan (20 hours of support)
JGB Scholarship (JGB research students) 6 months in Japan (20 hours of support)
All international students who plan to enroll for more than three months and who have been issued a residence card 1 month after arriving in Japan (15 hours of support)

Tutor's Role

As a Guide

Provide guidance to ensure that the student's studies and research at TUAT go smoothly.

As a Senior

Explain matters relating to schoolwork that international students do not fully understand, and correct the student's compositions as an advisor when he/she is writing up experiments and practical reports to improve his/her Japanese-language abilities.

As a Friend

Explain facets of Japanese daily life, culture and society in an easy-to-understand way, and occasionally ponder things together with international students. Compare and discuss international students' home country culture and society, and strive to deepen mutual understanding.

When you encounter difficulties that are hard to resolve on your own during tutor activities, please promptly contact the supervising faculty member or relevant staff, consult with them, and follow their guidance.

Office Procedure

Implementation Plan and Payment Request Form

At the beginning of each semester, submission of an implementation plan is required. Tutors should listen to the international students’ wishes and work together to create a feasible and realistic plan. Please submit the implementation plan and payment request form to the international student office of each faculty. (A list of contact offices and the templates for the implementation plan and progress report are also available at the end of the manual.)

Activity Report

Please report the guidance and activities you actually carried out during the period in the "Activity Report." This report is not only for reporting your activities but also serves as an opportunity to summarize any issues you faced and matters you wish to discuss with faculty members.
